Q&A with Joanne (early 30’s) – Government employee and part-time university student
Why did you decide start personal training and wellness coaching?
My life had become very small and I couldn’t ignore it any more. I was having difficulty doing normal everyday activities and I started to shy away from going out with friends. Although, the final straw was seeing photos of myself at a friend’s wedding in August 2013.
What goals did you have when you first met Chris?
None that were clearly defined. I just wanted to lose weight and feel comfortable in my skin again.
Did you have any injuries or special concerns that you needed Chris to be able to work around or improve?
Yes, I had recently torn ligaments in my ankle and was finding the simplest things (like walking) painful. Chris was very understanding and kept looking for ways I could exercise safely and still get results.
What changes or achievements do you feel you’ve made to your fitness and wellbeing to date?
I am really excited to say that 12 months into this journey I have lost 20% of my body weight and I’ve started to get out and socialise much more.
How do you feel now, compared to before you started your program?
I’m feeling great. I love it when an old friend sees me now and I get the wow moment. I can’t help but laugh when they tell me I’m an inspiration. It’s such a wonderful feeling.
What sort of training have you been doing?
Yoga and cardio, including walking, running or the cross trainer.
How many sessions do you do each week?
Three to four.
Do you train on your own sometimes? Or do you only do the sessions with Chris?
One or two a week with Chris and I try to do one or two alone.
How do you find the nutritional program and guidance?
Amusing some days. I’ve always found talking about food difficult. However, Chris doesn’t make me feel guilty about food. Instead he has guided me towards making better choices. I’ve found that my best results occur when I continuously ask myself “What Would Chris Say?”
What text message from Chris has made you laugh?
“Quick! Toss them!” (regarding Easter eggs left on my work desk).
What line has Chris used during training that made you chuckle or roll your eyes?
“It’s hurting me more than it’s hurting you.” Usually said while he is sitting, relaxed on a gym ball.
What are your favourite words of wisdom from Chris that have really struck a chord for you?
Don’t listen to other (negative) people.
How has Chris helped or supported you with achieving your goals?
Having someone to talk to about my goals and struggles, especially someone who just gets it.
What part of your training program do you enjoy most?
At the start when Chris walks over with a big smile (usually rubbing his hands).
What part of your training program do you enjoy least?
That moment when I ‘hit the wall’ and can’t push myself any further. My body usually gives up before my mind does.
How did you find out about Chris?
I attended the gym once before an accident (that tore ligaments in my ankle), and hadn’t been back. Then 2 months later I get a call from a friendly American. I wasn’t sure I was ready, but Chris convinced me and I was on my way to recovery.
Would you recommend Chris to your friends and family? Have you recommended Chris to your friends and family?
Yes, definitely have and would recommend Chris to my friends and family.
What’s your next health and fitness goal and how are you planning to achieve it?
I want to be safely inside a normal and healthy weight range. I feel like I’ve a got healthy and sustainable routine in place now to get there.
How has your life changed since you started your program? How do you feel?
I’m looking and feeling great. I’ve got a pretty busy schedule moving between work and university, but I’ve managed to change my attitude towards exercise and nutrition and have a better balance in life.
Thanks for sharing your experience Joanne!
